About Mountain Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon at 4000km has the largest volcanic base in the world and is a massive solitary volcanic mountain on the border of eastern Uganda and western Kenya. Its large form, 80km in diameter, rises 3000m above the sea level.

The park is home to over 300 species of birds including the endangered lammergeyer. Small antelopes, forest monkeys, elephants and buffalos also live on the mountainside. The higher slopes are also protected by national parks in Uganda and Kenya creating an extensive trans- boundary conservation area which has been declared a UNESCO man and biosphere reserve.

Accessibility to Mountain Elgon National Park

The Park can be by road and is about 235km east of Kampala a tarmac road through jinja to mbale at the western base of the mountain elgon before getting to kapchorwa on the north western side of the mountain. Tarmac off mbale kapchorwa road to various trailheads.

Activities in the Park

Mountain climbing

Mountain has many of the same attractions with milder climate and lower elevation, and requires no special equipment or technical experience. Mountain biking, one can go biking from sipi trading Centre to chema hill in kapchorwa town. And it takes about one and a half hours and provides a view of various waterfalls.

Birding

Here there are excellent birding opportunities that exist around kapkwai forest exploration Centre in particular the secondary forests and thick shrub along the loop trail to cheptui falls and it supports the African goshawk, chubbs cisticola white chinned prinia and African blue flycatcher among others.

Hiking

The visitor will enjoy the view and also being amongst the primates, birds, and rare tree species and where some trails lead to caves, viewpoints and waterfalls with the option of camping overnight on the mountain slopes.

Nature Walks

Here the visitors enjoy the view of the sipi falls, the walls of death and the African sunrise a cross the Karamoja plains on these peaceful walks out the park.

Rock Climbing

Here visitors go outside the park at sipi where there are 14 routes requiring various levels of rocks scaling techniques and the toughest is about 35m climb while the easier on is 15m.

Sport Fishing

Here the sport fishing is done highest of all the three waterfalls at sipi and this activity provides an exciting challenge to anglers who take pride in battling with the rainbow trout because it’s of beautiful coloration and fighting ability.

Cultural Encounters
